Bangladesh Coach Phil Simmons Urges Team to Elevate Performance Against Australia in Second Test
Bangladesh coach Phil Simmons has instructed his players to enhance their performance in preparation for the second Test against Australia in Mackay. He anticipates a stronger challenge from the home side, who are looking to level the series after Bangladesh’s nine-wicket victory in the first Test in Darwin.
After a lengthy two-stop journey, the team had an extra day off upon arriving in Mackay and resumed training on Wednesday. In a video shared across Bangladesh’s social media platforms post-victory, Simmons highlighted the significance of the win and reminded his players, “we came to play two Tests, not one.”
Following a rigorous three-hour training session at the Great Barrier Reef Arena, Simmons emphasized the need for improvement, stating, “Australia is going to come harder. So we have to either keep that level of performance or get a little bit better.” He mentioned that even marginal improvements would be necessary to stay competitive.
Reflecting on the triumph in Darwin, Simmons called it the best result he has achieved as a Test coach. He acknowledged the earlier difficulties in the warm-up match, where Bangladesh was bowled out for 54 against the Cricket Australia XI after an innings defeat to Zimbabwe. Despite this, Simmons maintained his belief in the squad, crediting their work ethic and commitment to improvement during practice sessions.
Simmons also discussed the potential inclusion of left-arm fast bowler Shoriful Islam, who has taken 27 wickets at an average of 36.03 across 13 Tests. While impressed by Shoriful’s training performance, he expressed a reluctance to alter a winning team, stating, “I’m one… who hardly likes to change winning teams.” However, he acknowledged that the decision would be tight, given the bowlers’ effective execution during the first Test.
In Darwin, Bangladesh’s seamers set a solid foundation by bowling Australia out for 198, followed by a strategic batting display that led them to 426 runs over 138 overs. Simmons elaborated on his philosophy regarding Test cricket, explaining the importance of resilience and maintaining pressure on the opponent throughout the five-day match.
As preparations continue, Simmons hopes to keep his players grounded amid the excitement following their victory. He remarked, “Bangladeshi people are emotional. I’m not the same, so it’s easy for me to control that.” Nonetheless, he expressed optimism that the team would settle back down ahead of the second Test, aiming to start strong in Mackay.
