India Defeats SLC XI in Tour Match with Strong Contributions from Gill, Jaiswal, and Siraj

India successfully chased down a target of 207, defeating Sri Lanka Cricket XI (SLC XI) in a tour match held in Colombo, thanks to notable performances from Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Mohammed Siraj. Gill, recovering from a finger injury, scored 44 runs off 54 balls, while Jaiswal struck 61 off 46, and Siraj contributed a quickfire 32 not out.

The match focused on Gill, who had not batted in the first innings due to his hand injury sustained prior to the game. However, he showcased his readiness by opening the innings and scoring effectively, hitting seven boundaries in his innings. “Gill has been absolutely fine and he’s been training,” said Sairaj Bahutule, India’s spin-bowling coach. “The management decided we could just take the precaution of not putting him in the first day. The way he batted in the second innings was flawless, and he’s very much ready for the Test match.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who missed India’s recent tours of the UK and Zimbabwe, also made a significant impact in his innings, hitting nine fours and two sixes before being retired out. Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar were also retired out on scores of 22 and 4, contributing to some late-game tension as India neared their target. Siraj capitalized on this scenario, sealing the win with a flurry of sixes.

Both teams batted 90 and 45 overs in their first and second innings respectively, adding symmetry to the match. Gill opened the batting after replacing KL Rahul and struck a solid start, partnering with Jaiswal for a 105-run stand. Jaiswal used an aggressive sweep shot against Ramesh Mendis, effectively pressuring the opposing bowlers.

As the innings progressed, Gill was caught off a leading edge, while Rishabh Pant took over and began with a six, pushing India further towards the target alongside Dhruv Jurel, with whom he added 45 runs before Jurel was dismissed.

On the bowling side, India began the day with a declaration, slightly behind on runs. Siraj made early inroads, claiming two quick wickets, including getting Ravindu Rasantha out plumb in front. Nishan Madushka put together impressive partnerships but was ultimately retired out after scoring 63 off 73 balls, stabilizing SLC XI’s innings.

Lunch saw SLC XI at over a hundred runs, but Jadeja’s introduction ended Anjala Bandara’s aggressive innings of 35, further restricting SLC XI, which declared at tea amid a sense of urgency.
