Hampshire Posts Record 383 in One-Day Cup, Defeats Sussex by 51 Runs

Toby Albert’s explosive batting propelled Hampshire to a formidable total of 383 for 9 in their Metro Bank One-Day Cup match against Sussex at Hove, marking Hampshire’s second-highest score in List A history. The total falls just short of their previous record of 396 for 5 against Kent in 2022 and equals the highest score recorded in this season’s competition. This victory secured Hampshire’s fourth win of the campaign, bolstering their knockout stage ambitions.

Despite a valiant chase led by Charlie Tear, who scored 111 runs off 94 balls, Sussex was unable to keep pace and fell short by 51 runs. This defeat added to their struggles in the competition, marking their sixth loss in seven matches.

Albert delivered a remarkable performance reminiscent of cricket great Sir Garfield Sobers, who recently passed away. Albert struck six consecutive sixes over two overs—first hitting two off Nantes Oosthuizen and then four off Ollie Kirtley. Meanwhile, Hampshire’s opening pair, Ali Orr and Ben Mayes, both surpassed the century mark, contributing significantly to their team’s impressive total. Mayes scored 109 in his first One-Day Cup appearance of the season, while Orr posted 105 runs, both achieving their milestones within a run-a-ball framework.

Hampshire embarked on a promising start, racing to 225 without losing a wicket. The partnership between Orr and Mayes raised expectations for an even higher total after amassing 200 runs in just 189 deliveries. Albert’s late onslaught added 86 runs from 37 balls, peppered with five fours and eight sixes, before he was eventually caught. Eddie Jack also added a quick-fire contribution of 20 runs from five balls.

Sussex struggled in their response, facing a record chase, having to surpass the 339 they sought against Lancashire last year. The team had a rocky start, losing Tom Haines and Oli Carter early. Tear showcased his form by reaching his third fifty of the season in just 40 balls, but after hitting a crucial six over extra cover, he fell while attempting another maximum. Jack Leaning (92) and Dan Ibrahim (55) provided some resistance, yet Sussex ultimately fell well short of their target.
