England Trail Pakistan by 59 Runs Following Dramatic First Innings Collapse

On a cloudy morning at Headingley, England’s Ollie Robinson delivered a stellar performance, claiming his fifth Test five-wicket haul as Pakistan crumbled for 171 runs. He was supported by Josh Tongue, who took four wickets, contributing significantly to Pakistan’s downfall.

Pakistan’s innings suffered a dramatic collapse after a 91-run partnership between Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq provided the only substantial resistance. Following this partnership, Pakistan lost their last eight wickets for just 74 runs, marking their lowest first-innings score in a decade. At the close of play, England found themselves at 112 for 2, trailing by 59 runs with eight wickets remaining.

England captain Joe Root won a crucial toss, opting to bowl under conditions that appeared favorable for his bowlers. Despite a brief resistance from Salman Ali Agha and Mohammad Rizwan, who averaged close to 40 as a pair, their efforts were ultimately in vain. Tongue’s unplayable delivery bowled out Rizwan, contributing to Pakistan’s rapid collapse and ending their innings at 171.

In response, England’s opening batsmen began positively, but Pakistan found a glimmer of hope when Mohammad Abbas trapped Ben Duckett LBW, followed by Emilio Gay’s dismissal by Mohammad Ali. Nevertheless, Root’s steady presence at the crease, alongside Jordan Cox, brought stability to England, who are set on a promising path as they bid to overhaul Pakistan’s first-innings total.
