Google Introduces New AI-Powered Study Tools in Search and Gemini

On Wednesday, Google unveiled a range of innovative study tools designed to enhance learning experiences through its Search and Gemini platforms. The new features, which include AI-generated interactive visuals, 3D simulations, a dedicated learning hub, and customized practice quizzes, aim to position Gemini as a leading AI assistant for students amidst growing competition from companies like OpenAI and educational startups such as Knowt and Gauth.

In Search, students can now create personalized tools and simulations to simplify complex subjects. For instance, entering “pH scale” yields an interactive visual that clarifies the fundamentals of pH levels. Moreover, if a student seeks a more specialized inquiry, such as plotting citrus fruits on the pH scale, the AI Mode in Search can generate a tailored interactive experience.

Additionally, learners can request customized practice quizzes across various subjects, including science, math, humanities, and foreign languages. A user might prompt, “Create a quiz with the most commonly tested vocabulary words to help me prep for the SAT,” resulting in an interactive quiz generated by the Search engine.

Upcoming features will also include a new interactive learning experience via Lens in Search, which will assist students in problem-solving. By tapping the “Lens” camera icon in the Google app, students can upload a photo of their assignments, allowing the AI to explain concepts, identify mistakes, and offer guidance when assistance is needed.

Moreover, learners can now request Search to generate study documents from uploaded files, which may include PDFs, Word documents, or slides. For instance, a user can upload a picture of their handwritten notes alongside lecture slides to receive a one-page summary outlining key concepts.

On the Gemini platform, Google has introduced a feature allowing students to initiate multi-step research reports in Gemini Live. Users can ask Gemini to investigate a topic, continue with other tasks while it conducts the research, and receive notifications upon report completion. Following that, they can discuss the findings or pose follow-up questions using voice commands.

Gemini is also equipped to create functional 3D simulations that enhance comprehension of various topics. Responses now include specially tailored tables, grids, and simulations. For example, a prompt requesting “show me how DNA works in 3D” will enable users to interactively rotate and zoom into a 3D representation of DNA.

In addition, Google is rolling out a dedicated hub within the Gemini app that consolidates all learning tools in one location. Users will have the capability to start a study notebook, create flashcards, complete practice quizzes, and more directly within this hub.
