Date:

Warwickshire Edges Out Lancashire by Two Wickets in Metro Bank One-Day Cup Thriller

Warwickshire triumphed over Lancashire by two wickets in a gripping Metro Bank One-Day Cup encounter, keeping their knockout stage hopes alive. The Bears chased down a target of 312, finishing on 314 for 8, while Lancashire missed the opportunity to secure their spot in the next phase but can still qualify with a win against Somerset on Tuesday.

Batting first, Lancashire set a competitive total of 311 for 5. Skipper Marcus Harris top-scored for them with 89 runs, while Josh Bohannon contributed 62 and Andrew Flintoff added an unbeaten 61. The team enjoyed a solid start but lost Matty Hurst early, caught off an edge from Oliver Hannon-Dalby. Keaton Jennings’s aggressive innings was curtailed when he was bowled by Michael Booth.

Despite initial setbacks, Lancashire flourished, especially in the final overs, scoring 110 runs in the last 10. The talented teenager Jack Blatherwick also made a notable contribution with a quick 26 runs to bolster the total.

In their run chase, Warwickshire began strongly but faced early tumults with their score at 113 for 2 upon the arrival of 21-year-old Jani. He played a pivotal role in the innings, scoring 88 runs from 52 balls, establishing control with 12 boundaries and three sixes, before being dismissed by Blatherwick.

Dan Mousley, who scored 67, was vital in the innings’ first half, partnering well with Rob Yates and Zen Malik, who both fell to unfortunate dismissals. As the chase progressed, a few wickets fell quickly, prompting some late-game nervousness as the Bears lost Kai Smith and George Garton cheaply.

However, Alex Davies remained steady at the crease. He scored an important unbeaten 51 to guide Warwickshire home, navigating the late pressure despite the fall of Booth and Ethan Bamber. The team’s composure in the final stretches proved crucial in achieving a successful chase.
