Lionel Messi Shares Heartfelt Grief Over Father’s Passing
Lionel Messi, the esteemed soccer player often hailed as the greatest of all time, is publicly grappling with the emotional aftermath of his father Jorge Messi’s death, which occurred at the age of 68 in early August. In a poignant statement released on August 12, Messi expressed his profound sorrow and disbelief at the loss.
“Dad, I still can’t believe you’re gone,” Messi stated in the translated message. “It hasn’t sunk in, I don’t want it to sink in. It’s so hard to imagine that I won’t see you again, that we won’t talk anymore. I know you were suffering and that this is for the best, but you left too soon. We still had so much left to enjoy together.”
In his statement, Messi also reflected on the impact his father had on his career, particularly as he prepares for the 2026 World Cup. He recounted his father’s encouragement for him to play, noting the deep bond they shared around the sport. However, Messi lamented that Jorge’s health deteriorated just before the tournament began, which sadly prevented him from attending any of the games.
