American Pie Star Celebrates One Year of Sobriety
In October 2018, the American Pie star publicly announced his milestone of one year sober with an uplifting message on Instagram. He reflected on his initial attempts to overcome addiction, revealing it was over five years earlier that he first sought sobriety, faced with the burdens of alcohol and drug obsession. “Turns out this s–t is hard,” he candidly expressed at the time.
He continued his post by celebrating his achievement: “After some fits and starts, I’ve managed to put together one year of sobriety. I’m as proud of it as anything in my life. If you’re struggling, know there’s help. Don’t be ashamed. We can do this.”
In a later discussion on his wife Jenny Mollen’s podcast, All the Fails, he revisited his struggle with addiction and the extent to which he concealed his actions. He described a troubling routine where, despite attending therapy sessions, he would leave, purchase a bottle of vodka, and drink it en route home. “I knew how to get wasted enough to where I took myself out of the life equation,” he explained, indicating his attempts to disconnect from reality.
He elaborated on his methods, stating, “I had it figured out to a T. To not get too drunk where I couldn’t have a conversation with you. I was replacing those bottles in the bar all the time.” His reflections illustrated the complex challenge of managing his addiction while trying to maintain a façade of normalcy.
