Nintendo Switch 2 Model Begins Shipping with EU Compliance Updates

The updated Nintendo Switch 2 model has commenced shipping, prompting players to disassemble the device to identify differences from the initial launch model. Nintendo has announced that it is developing new revisions of the Switch 2 console and its accessories to meet compliance with the European Union’s Right to Repair directive and new battery regulations.
Under the EU’s guidelines, battery-powered devices must enable users to easily access and replace batteries. Nintendo previously indicated that the new model would be available starting this summer, and it has now begun appearing in stores.
In a comparative teardown video, the YouTube channel Nintendúo showcased distinctions between the launch model and the EU-compliant revision. The updated design reveals that the new model features a battery capacity reduced by 1 percent, equating to approximately 48 mAh. Additionally, the console—for which Joy-Cons are attached—has an increased weight of 14 grams.
A notable alteration is the visibility of screws inside the Joy-Con rails, which were previously concealed by warranty void and anti-tamper stickers, facilitating easier access to the console’s internal components.
Upon removing the back cover, it is evident that the heat shield no longer encompasses the battery, simplifying access and replacement procedures. The battery is now shielded with thick insulation to mitigate heat risks.
Distinguishing between the two models can be challenging without physically inspecting the packaging. Online product pages may reveal visible screws in the Joy-Con rails, and the updated model is identified by the OSM product code, with serial numbers commencing with HLE in Europe.
Revisions for the Joy-Cons and Switch 2 Pro Controller are scheduled to be rolled out at various times throughout the year, while updates for the N64 and GameCube controllers are planned for early 2027. Notably, the teardown video does not discuss any controller teardowns. Moreover, Nintendo is set to offer replaceable batteries along with a comprehensive kit containing instructions for battery access, removal, and replacement.
Nintendo is implementing the transition to updated Switch 2 models at retail locations incrementally, meaning customers cannot select which revision to purchase without careful examination, as outlined in this report.
