No Man’s Sky’s much-anticipated 10th anniversary Cosmos update has been released, marking a significant “complete overhaul of space.” This substantial update introduces features such as space station ownership, the formation of alliances, and the capability to fly to the sun.

“No Man’s Sky is often referred to as ‘a Space Game,'” states Hello Games in their announcement. “It’s a huge part of our game, but we’ve never really updated space since release. In most sci-fi games, space is just an empty void. With Cosmos we wondered – can we make space feel truly alive? And could we make space feel more like home?”

The update allows players to purchase and customize space stations within their chosen solar systems, inviting friends to explore their creative spaces. Additionally, players can construct free-floating modular bases in space, with suggestions for creating starship truck stops, military outposts, or even orbital restaurants.

Asteroid belts have been enhanced, now featuring rock and ice formations that provide valuable crystal resources, with some asteroids large enough to land on and build upon. Scanning a new system can reveal new points-of-interest, including outposts for trading with alien lifeforms, acquiring maps, and engaging in new missions.

Space hulks are available for salvage using a gravity gun, allowing players to collect scrap to utilize with a newly introduced tractor beam. However, players must exercise caution, as being overly ambitious can lead to hazardous explosions. Additionally, the update introduces bio-wrecks, some of which contain biological hazards that need to be cleared for reclamation. Importantly, the system’s sun is now reachable for the first time, albeit through a perilous journey.

The update also introduces a new alliance system, enabling players to collaborate and build interconnected empires of space stations, competing for leaderboards based on size, wealth, or prominence.

Accompanying today’s update is a limited-time expedition titled ‘Our Journey Continues,’ which prompts players to achieve milestones reflecting one of the 40 major updates since No Man’s Sky’s launch in 2016. “It is like a museum of each update,” notes Hello Games, “unlocking the features of each update as we added them, along with a spacelog of interesting facts and developers commentary for each update.”

The Cosmos update is available now on all platforms, including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 1&2, Mac, PSVR 1&2, PC VR, and Game Pass. For more information, full patch notes can be found on Hello Games’ website. Additionally, Eurogamer has featured a story on players building utopia at the edge of the universe, offering further insights into the game’s evolution.
