Sony Set to Revive Ape Escape with Evening Star Development Team
- Sony plans to revive classic PlayStation titles, starting with a new Ape Escape.
- The game is being developed by Evening Star, known for Sonic Mania.
- PlayStation may collaborate with additional third-party developers on legacy IP.
Sony is reportedly aiming to bring back select classic PlayStation titles, beginning with a new installment of the Ape Escape series. This development was shared on The Jeff Gerstmann podcast, where Gerstmann mentioned that Evening Star, the independent studio behind Sonic Mania and Penny’s Big Breakaway, is at the helm of the project.
Gerstmann indicated that while a timeline for the game’s release remains unclear, discussions around the project have been ongoing for nearly a year. He clarified, “I don’t think this game is close to being out or anything like that,” and emphasized that Evening Star is the external studio tasked with the revival, rather than Team Asobi, creators of Astro Bot.
Moreover, Video Games Chronicle (VGC) has confirmed that PlayStation’s efforts won’t be limited to Ape Escape alone. The company is poised to engage more outside developers for various legacy intellectual properties, following a similar strategy with the upcoming 2025 title, Everybody’s Golf: Hot Shots, developed by Bandai Namco.
The original Ape Escape series, a collection of popular 3D platformers from the PS1 and PS2 eras, involved players capturing mischievous monkeys using inventive gadgets. The last main installment, Ape Escape 3, was released in 2005, although a tribute was featured in Astro Bot.
Given the nostalgic value of PlayStation’s classic games, fans are eager for potential announcements of other revivals. Among the rumored projects is a new Killzone game from People Can Fly, known for Outriders and Gears of War: Judgment, leaving many to speculate which franchises might see new life soon.
