Next StarCraft Game Will Not Be Destiny-Style Shooter

The anticipation for the next installment of the StarCraft franchise is intensifying, following reports that Korean developer-publisher Nexon has secured the rights for its development. This heightened buzz is further fueled by visual glitches appearing on the official StarCraft 2 website, indicating an upcoming announcement.
Recent insights from Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier suggest that players should not expect the next StarCraft game to emulate the Destiny-style live service model. In a discussion with former Polygon guides producer Ryan Gilliam, Schreier stated, “I wouldn’t count on this StarCraft game being a Destiny-like, I’ll say that.” This comment was especially disappointing for those hoping for a well-funded successor to Destiny.
Notably, Blizzard, the developer behind several successful live service titles, seems to be steering away from this approach for the new project. As speculation arises regarding the game’s potential direction, Windows Central editor Jez Corden has reported that the next StarCraft title might take inspiration from Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and could also draw elements from the Far Cry series. Corden noted, “From what I saw it’s more Space Marine 2 / Far Cry kinda adjacent, but dunno for sure what the overall gameplay formula will be.”
The reference to the Far Cry series is intriguing, especially since it has been reported that former Far Cry executive Dan Hay is leading the development of the StarCraft shooter at Blizzard. However, the distinct differences between Space Marine 2 and Far Cry make it unclear what specific elements Corden was alluding to.
The mystery surrounding the new title is expected to be unveiled at BlizzCon, set for September 12-13. Given the recent hints and clues, the opening ceremony is anticipated to be the moment when the game is officially revealed.
