During today’s Nintendo Direct, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Zelda franchise, gameplay for the highly anticipated remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was finally showcased. The game is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5th.
Narrated by producer Eiji Aonuma, the revealed gameplay presents a faithful recreation of the original 3D adventure, enhanced by a new game engine. Among the modern features introduced, Link now possesses the ability to jump manually, a notable change from the original release.
The remake retains many classic sounds and animations, with familiar elements such as the iconic chest opening animation appearing almost unchanged, albeit with a modern aesthetic. Additional new features include Link’s ability to swim and dive underwater, the option to swap items with a single button press, and fully voiced character dialogue in cutscenes.
Furthermore, Hyrule Castle Town will feature new areas that were previously inaccessible, while players can now dash to enhance movement speed. The game introduces a real-time day-night cycle while still maintaining loading screens to preserve the experience of the original.
An interesting gameplay mechanic allows players to use their microphone to interact with Link’s ocarina. By humming, whistling, or singing, players can perform various tunes that lead to gameplay alterations.
The presentation emphasized significant audio enhancements, with fully voiced cutscenes and the addition of the game’s theme to the Nintendo Music platform. Additionally, a companion app named Zelda notes will be available, facilitating screenshot capturing and mini-quests, including a feature for creating custom ocarina music tracks and a quiz.
Lastly, two new amiibos for the Ocarina of Time remake will be released, each unlocking in-game masks upon usage. What are your thoughts on these announcements?
