Alonso Confirms Fernández’s Commitment to Chelsea Ahead of Fulham Clash
Xabi Alonso has officially reaffirmed that Enzo Fernández remains a Chelsea player, as the Argentine midfielder prepares for Monday’s match against Fulham. Chelsea had previously entertained the prospect of Fernández’s departure but set a firm deadline of 5 p.m. BST on Friday, August 14, for any potential transfer negotiations.
Despite interest from Manchester City, where coach Enzo Maresca previously worked with Fernández, no deal transpired. Chelsea has valued the 2022 World Cup winner at £120 million ($161.8 million). Sources indicate that Chelsea reached out to Fernández’s representatives around that time, conveying their expectation for him to continue with the club at least until next summer.
When asked about Fernández’s status during a press conference on Thursday, Alonso remarked, “Enzo is a Chelsea player. He’s a top, top player. He’s training really well. We are happy with him and he’s getting ready for Monday.” On that day, Chelsea is set to kick off their campaign against local rivals Fulham at Craven Cottage, with Alonso facing former Real Madrid teammate Alvaro Arbeloa.
Arbeloa, who assumed managerial duties for Madrid after Alonso’s departure, is another compelling subplot for the upcoming match. Alonso emphasized the competitive nature of the encounter, stating, “You can have a relationship, but once we’re on the pitch, no friends and no past. We are fighting for 90 minutes.”
