Ubisoft Expands Massive Entertainment’s Role, Introduces New Game
- Ubisoft has expanded Massive Entertainment’s responsibilities, now overseeing more studios and brands.
- The studio is now in charge of the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell franchises.
- Ubisoft announced a new game, March of Giants, but provided no further details.
Ubisoft has broadened the scope of its Swedish studio, Massive Entertainment, which is known for titles such as The Division series, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. The studio will now serve as a second major component of Ubisoft, incorporating more studios and game brands under its umbrella. Additionally, Ubisoft has announced the development of an original game titled March of Giants.
The newly expanded Massive Entertainment brand now includes Ubisoft’s Creative House 2 cluster of studios, as per the company’s announcement earlier this week. This expansion means Massive Entertainment will now oversee the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell franchises, in addition to managing multiple global studios.
“The Massive Entertainment brand builds on a nearly three-decade legacy established in Sweden through its games and technology, earning the trust of players and recognition from industry peers alike,” Massive stated in a press release.
As part of the reorganization, Christoph Hartmann, who was appointed general manager of Ubisoft Creative House 2 earlier this year, has taken on the role of general manager of Massive Entertainment. He noted, “Bringing our teams together under one identity gives us the opportunity to combine the creative energy and expertise across Montréal, Paris, Sweden, and Toronto to shape the next generation of these iconic franchises, create new games and IPs, and push our craft and technology forward.”
While details about March of Giants remain scarce, the announcement confirmed it as an original game idea.
This restructuring marks another chapter in Ubisoft’s ongoing transformation, following the establishment of a new subsidiary named Vantage Studios after a €1.16 billion investment from Tencent. Vantage Studios was created to manage key franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, positioning Massive Entertainment as another leading multi-franchise subsidiary within Ubisoft.
The restructuring has also led to several layoffs across the company. In January, Ubisoft closed its studios in Halifax and Stockholm and laid off personnel at Ubisoft Abu Dhabi, Redlynx, and Massive Entertainment. The company reportedly eliminated 105 positions at Ghost Recon studio Red Storm Entertainment in March, reducing its role to that of a support studio. Further layoffs in June involved the closure of Ubisoft’s Winnipeg and Belgrade studios, alongside staff reductions at Ubisoft Barcelona, totaling around 380 job losses.
