Xbox Launches Disc-to-Digital Feature for Console Owners
- Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature is now available for all Xbox One and Xbox Series X owners.
- The feature converts physical game discs into digital copies, tied to the user’s account.
- Compatible games can be played on PC via Xbox Play Anywhere and additional features aid in conversion.
After approximately one month of testing, Microsoft has officially launched the disc-to-digital feature for all Xbox console owners. This feature enables users to convert their physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs into digital copies.
According to Microsoft, the disc-to-digital feature works with “most” physical games from both generations, but not all titles are eligible. The criteria for eligibility may change over time due to “technical, licensing, publishing, manufacturing, and other factors,” as noted on Xbox’s support page.
To utilize the disc-to-digital feature, users need to insert a compatible disc into their console, subsequently giving them the option to create a digital copy. This action associates the game with the user’s account, eliminating the requirement to insert the disc for authentication during gameplay.
The digital license remains tied to the disc, allowing the original owner to resell or give away their game. The new owner can follow the same process to secure their own digital copy, which deactivates the original owner’s license. This effectively merges the benefits of both digital and physical game formats.
Furthermore, games compatible with Xbox Play Anywhere can be downloaded and played on PC using the Xbox app. Users can filter their library by Play Anywhere support to easily identify titles that feature the disc-to-digital badge.
The launch version of the disc-to-digital feature also includes an option to stop discs from automatically initiating the installation process. This is particularly useful for users converting multiple discs, as it allows the console to recognize the disc exclusively for digitization without beginning the installation.
For those looking to digitize their collections, it is advisable to review the disc-to-digital Xbox support page to become familiar with potential error codes and other issues that may arise during the process.
